Wireless communication

The project has installed self-sustained LTE communication modules consisting of a micro LTE base station, a satellite Internet access system, and a PV system with energy storage capacity. The micro LTE base station allows for secure wireless communications as long as the Internet is operational because the radio access network and the core network are embedded in a single unit. Additionally, several LTE-to-WiFi modems/routers have been placed on various outdoor locations on campus, and low-power LTE-to-WiFi modems have also been installed for indoor coverage in selected areas. Finally, the satellite Internet access system consists of a miniature dish antenna and a small Internet modem. It keeps the LTE base station connected to the Internet when the wired Internet connection is disrupted.

This project has been funded by the IIllinois Environmental Protection Agency and US Department of Energy (Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy)
